Running operations and a remote team

What do we check before telling a client something is done?

We look at the result itself, not at the tool that said it worked. A task is reported as done with proof, or as blocked with the reason. There is no third answer.

Done with proof

  • A sent email is read back in the sent folder, with its attachment on it.
  • A page that went live is opened at its live address.
  • A change inside a system is read back from that system afterwards.
  • The proof is written down: a link, a file, or what was checked.

Blocked, and why

If something cannot be finished, the report says so plainly and names what it is waiting on. A quiet gap is worse than an honest one, because the client plans around what we told them.

Why a green tick is not enough

Automated steps can finish without doing the job. A run can end with no error and still have sent nothing. So the person responsible checks the outcome a customer would see, every time.

Where this comes from

This is how our own team works every day. It is not taken from one client.
