For years, Google has been the place people search for a product before they click through to a store. Universal Cart moves part of the shopping itself into Google. A shopper can save what they like from different stores, keep it all in one place, and come back to it later.
That is a real change for anyone with an online store, so it is worth understanding exactly what Google announced, without filling the gaps with guesses.
What Google Announced
In a post on its own blog, Google described what Universal Cart does for a shopper in the U.S.:
Wherever they shop on Google, including Google Search and the Gemini app, shoppers can add products from multiple retailers to a single cart.
The cart lets shoppers know when a saved item drops in price or comes back in stock.
It finds promo codes and suggests payment methods, reading card perks from the shopper's Google Wallet.
Checkout happens through Google Pay or by sending the items to the store's own website.
Google named Nike, Sephora, Target, Ulta Beauty, Walmart, Wayfair and Shopify merchants as retailers for checkout. It said the cart runs on its Shopping Graph, which holds more than 60 billion product listings that are refreshed all the time.
What Google did not say: there are no published numbers about sales, fees or how products are ranked in the cart. Anyone promising you more sales from Universal Cart right now is guessing.
What This Means for a Small Online Store
The big shift is that your product details now matter inside Google itself, not only on your own site. A shopper can keep your product in the same cart as a competitor's and get told when either one changes price. Wrong prices, or items that show as available when they are sold out, become easier for a shopper to notice, because the cart is watching them.
Before
- A shopper found your product on Google, then left for your site
- Comparing stores meant juggling open tabs
- Your prices and stock mostly mattered once shoppers reached your store
Now, for U.S. shoppers
- Your product can be saved in a Google cart alongside other stores
- Price drops and restocks are flagged to the shopper
- Checkout can run through Google Pay or send the shopper to your site
If You Sell on Shopify
Google lists Shopify merchants among the retailers for checkout. There is also a related setting worth knowing about. Shopify stores that use the Google and YouTube app have a "Checkout link settings" option. It can send shoppers from a Google product listing straight to your store's checkout page. U.S. stores with valid checkout addresses are switched on automatically.
If you would rather send shoppers to your product page first, you can turn it off in the Google and YouTube app: open Settings, then Product feed settings, then Manage beside "Checkout link settings", choose "Don't include a link to checkout", and save.
One honest caveat: Google's help page for this setting does not mention Universal Cart by name. Treat it as a setting worth checking so you know where your Google shoppers land, not as the switch that controls Universal Cart.
What Is Worth Checking This Week
- Prices. Make sure the prices Google shows for your products match your store.
- Stock. Make sure sold out items show as sold out, and restocks show up when they happen.
- Where shoppers land. If you are on Shopify, look at your checkout link setting in the Google and YouTube app and decide whether you want shoppers sent to checkout or to your product page.
At Balay ni Bruno & Co. we build and run Shopify stores for our clients. Universal Cart is new, so we are not going to claim results from it. What we can say is that clean, accurate product details have always been the groundwork for being found on Google, and now they follow your products into the cart as well.
Common Questions
What is Google Universal Cart?
It is a shopping cart inside Google. Shoppers in the U.S. can save products from different stores in one cart while they search on Google or use the Gemini app. Google launched it on 15 October 2026.
Can shoppers buy my products without visiting my website?
Google says checkout happens either through Google Pay or by sending the items to the store's own site. Google did not publish which stores get which kind of checkout beyond the retailers it named.
Does Universal Cart work with Shopify stores?
Google names Shopify merchants among the retailers for checkout. Separately, Shopify stores using the Google and YouTube app have a checkout link setting that can send shoppers from a Google listing straight to the store's checkout. Google's help page does not tie that setting to Universal Cart by name, so treat it as a setting worth checking, not as the Universal Cart switch.
Will Universal Cart increase my sales?
Nobody can say yet. Google did not publish any numbers about sales, fees or ranking, so any promise of more sales would be a guess.
